Greatest Hits Thai

How do you get used to getting punched in the face?
I love going to the gym and picking up new techniques but I find that I've focused primarily on wrestling and BJJ. Not that those are bad styles but I want to become an efficient MMA fighter one day and I know my stand-up leaves much to be desired. There are Muay Thai and Boxing classes offered at the gym but there aren't many opportunities to spar during class. My instructor said that next month he will add more sparing but I've tried to spar before and it just looks awful. I often turn away and leave myself vulnerable. The guy who I sparred with told me, "it only hurts as much as You Think it will" but I'm not sure if he just said that to make me feel better. It's a shame because I hit very hard and would be a great striker but obviously it's harder to punch someone who's fighting back.
It's not that I can't take a punch, I have a hard head and a tough chin but it's more of a mental thing because I don't practice it a lot.
A lot of people have to get used to getting hit in the face and keeping their composure. Some will go ballistic, others close their eyes or turn away and others will be intimidated that they will not fight. It really is a matter of getting used to. Start with practicing with a partner and light contact and then crank it up slowly. It really is all in the mind.
Over the years I have also noticed something else. Ever think of blocking? With all the rules most people suck up a punch and very few people learn to block effectively anymore. This is OK in the ring, you lose a fight if you get hit and it's not that big of a deal but in the street it can cost you a lot more. Since you didn't mention what kind of fighter you want to be ring/sports or self defense I let you think about this.
