ok,here's the story:initally the album that was going to be sgt.pepper's was in fact supposed to be a theme album about the beatles liverpool childhood,the 1st 2 songs recorded for this project,"strawberry fields forever"and "penny lane",were about places that lennon and mccartney knew as children.however,shortly after "penny lane"was finished,the beatles american label,capitol, hounded brian epstein for anything that could be released as a single.you have to understand this was the mid-60's,so it was expected for a band to release a single every 3 to 4 months,and capitol was freaking out.reluctantly the 1st 2 songs recorded were released,thus torpedoing the original concept.the sgt.pepper idea came about as a way for the beatles to gain a measure of creative freedom for themselves.in fact sgt.pepper was kind of meant to be a rock opera of sorts with sgt.pepper and a bunch of other acts,however once a little help from my friends was made,the beatles decided to junk the concept,although neil aspinall,the beatles road manager,suggested the idea of having sgt.pepper come on to both open and close the album(hence the reprise).hope this helps
