best place to start with Meister Eckhart?
hi y'all,
i'm a college student who has taken an interest in Eckhart's works after seeing him quoted frequently in Aldous Huxley's "The Perennial Philosophy." What would be the best of his works, or compilations of his works, for me to start with? I see that a lot of his works are published in "best of classics" volumes, what's the best?
I cannot afford his complete works, btw.
I once looked up Meister Eckhart on Wikipedia, printed out 8 pages of info on him. The only work of his that is referred to by name is the "Theologica Germanica", which was published by an anonymous author and without the imprimatur of the church, so not sure if that is enough data to find a copy. However, it is said to have had a very strong influence for the next couple centuries, including on Martin Luther, and possibility a pivotal role in the thinking that led to the protestant reformation.
Also, if you can find his sermons, they are very good. He is a mystic and his teachings compared to Buddhism, especially Zen.
My favorite quote from Eckhart: "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience".
