is there any possible way to transfer music from audio cassettes onto CDs?
Im not really too hopeful since it seems like it wouldn't really be possible but it would be nifty, and it nevewr hurts to wonder right? the reason being i have ALOT of old cassettes that i am particularly fond of, but am not fond of transporting around. Also since that technology is becoming very obsolete its harder and harder to even find anything to play them in. and i don't really want to buy the cd's all over again since i already have them, and so on and so forth.
Yes, there are several ways to transfer audiocassettes to CDs.
1) If you have a computer and a cassette player, you can "digitize" your music into wave files in your computer and then burn them onto discs. Use the audio out port of your cassette player, or if it doesn't have it, use the headphones port, to get a sound output from your tapes. Get an audio jack with one end compatible with your cassette ("RCA" if it's audio out, "Mini-PL" if it's a headphone port) and the other end compatible with the "audio in"/"line in" port of your soundcard (most soundcards are "mini-pl"). If you have a Discman, it probably came with an RL-to-Mini-PL audio jack, check that out.
Once you have your cassette player jacked in to your computer, check its sound output in Windows audio settings and make sure the "line in" function is activated. Try experimenting with volume levels in both the Windows line in settings, and with the one on your player (if it has), to get maximum volume without sound distortion.
Next, you'll need a program to record the audio input. You probably already have a program bundled with your computer's cd burner, check the cd burner bundle (for example, a Nero bundle would probably have the "Nero Wave Editor" program) that handles recording. Otherwise, you can download a nifty free software called "Audacity" from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/.
Just follow the how-to's/tutorials/help files in your recording software to record the audio coming in from your cassette player, then you'll have wave files That You can then burn onto CDs. Make sure you have enough disk space for the amount of cassettes you plan to convert, although you can actually erase those files that you've already burnt to CD.
2) Another option is to hunt for those CD recorders that have built-in audiocassette players. If you don't know anyone who owns one, try looking in appliance/electronics thrift shops, you can probably get one cheap, especially since the technology is on its way out. Make sure it's not the other way around (cassette recorders with built-in cd players are 100x more common).
3) Go to an audio-video service center to ask if they do that conversion and for how much. You just might find that your time and effort may be worth just as much as what they would charge, then it would be cost-effective. You might also try asking companies that do photo and video coverage of events (weddings, baptisms, etc) if they can do that service (since they probably already have the required equipment for the job).
Good luck!
