I can't say for certain since I don't live in Australia but I know that Blue Sky Mine raised consciousness about the issue. I saw them in the US for an Earth Day concert when the song was new, and they played it and talked about the issue. I still remember it. Several of the bands from the mid-80s that had politically aware or advocacy messages affected me and probably others in my generation (U2, Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel, Hugh Masekela, Bob Geldof) -- it alerted me to these issues and I now have a career working in human rights and international development.
