What can be substituted for substitute for Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce in sushi recipes?
I want to make sushi rolls at home. I have the necessary equipment and recipes which call for substitute for Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. I was wondering if there was a suitable substitute. I already have Tobasco and Texas Pete. Would either of them work?
Tabasco and Texas Pete sauces are both too thin and watery. Most sushi recipes require a hot sauce that has a thicker consistency. Sriracha sauce is widely available in most grocery stores across the US. It is a combination of hot chilis and garlic, with justa touch of sugar, so the taste would be different from any American hot sauce. I second the previous responder's suggestion about Sambal Oelek (there is an E in oelek). It is a thick Indonesian chili-garlic sauce, with a bit coarser consistency than Sriracha sauce, but its texture may be a bit too coarse if you're looking to make a sushi sauce, but if you're mixing it in to make something like spicy tuna, then it would work fine for that. If you're having a hard time finding Sriracha sauce, you'll have an even harder time finding sambal oelek. If you really like making your own sushi, I strongly suggest you check out some of the local Asian grocery stores in your area. I know that some people are a bit scared by them, but think of it as an adventure! You'll discover a whole world of ingredients you've never heard of before.
