How do I copy from VHS tape down to an audio 90 minute cassette?

...I record on VHS tape, 6 hours of Gospel bluegrass on Sundays, using my VCR/DVD recorder. I get it over my DISH NETWORK package, and it is on a Sirius radio station.
...I record these programs to share with my senior citizen friend at a retirement home. My desire is to copy it from my Magnavox VHS/DVD down to cassette tape. The DVD/VHS records has audio out jacks. I tried to connect with my Magnavox double cassette, tested it, and it did not work.
...How do I do this?
1. Do I need different cables?
2. Do I need another double cassette recorder?
3. Do I need some sort of converter box?
...Any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated.
The logical method to go about this, from my experience, is RCA cables, so I'm going to assume that's what you're using.
Your problem could be 1) the VCR, 2) the cables, or 3) the tape deck.
First thing to check is whether the cables work. Do this by connecting the VCR to a TV. If the audio comes through ok, then the cables are ok. If you're using the VCR as the source, that also verifies that it is ok, leaving the tape deck.
If that test fails, switch out the suspect components one at a time. This should let you know which one is faulty.
