Why And When Did U2 Lose Their Heart For Music?
I am a huge fan of the band. Have been ever since I picked up a cassette copy of War way back in 84. But, like it or not, after a run of brilliant albums (Boy, War, Joshua Tree) there was a huge falloff in the quality of their music starting with Achtung Baby, which in and of itself wasn't a bad album, but it sure wasn't as great as War, or even The Unforgettable Fire. And since Zooropa? They've been mostly awful.

BQ2: Favorite U2 member, album and song?
BQ3: Is Bono a jerk? Yay or Nay? And if he is, do this color your outlook on U2?
Achtung Baby was they last album I really cared for Shades, but now as far as their concerts yeah, they still got it.
The Edge has always been my favorite. His sound is so unique.
Well, Karl.... I saw them a few weeks ago, and I saw no evidence of their "losing their heart for music". Quite the opposite. They made a most joyful noise ~ wonderful and exciting stuff. Seemed to me that their hearts were totally in it.
Now as to why they aren't making the music they were making 20-30 years ago... well, we all grow up eventually... we change and become at least a little bit jaded... a little less idealistic. Our relationships with the opposite sex settle into a more compromising groove.. IOW, we don't tend to howl at the moon quite as much as when we were young. And we shouldn't be expected to.
As for myself, those earlier albums are the BEST. But that doesn't mean I don't love lots of their more recent stuff, too.
BQ: Yay!
BQ2: It has changed over the years... I think I've had a crush on each of them at one time or another. And I don't mean just 'crush' ~ I mean musically, too. Fave album: The Unforgettable Fire or Rattle and Hum. Fave song.... there are lots, but I'll name: It's a Beautiful Day. That song is such an upper...
BQ3: Nay. He's trying to something meaningful with the level of attention he garners.
