How do I comfort my dog without encouraging the fear?
With it being fourth of July, I'm looking for a good way to reassure my dog if he gets scared from the fireworks. I'm a Biology major and learn as much about training when I can. I know that comforting with a sweet voice ("good dog, it's ok" etc) isn't good because it can make them get the idea that acting scared and frantic is ok. Aside from just conditioning them around loud noises, what can be done at the time of the action? Thanks for the advice
Absolutely nothing. Like you said, petting and reassuring only works on children, not dogs, you will only do what you said, reinforce the fear. All you can do is ignore her and make sure she doesn't get too stressed out. if she does try moving to another room and act as if nothing is wrong, turn on the TV and turn it up and act normal, try hard not to reinforce with voice reassurance.
My dog does not fear thunder or lightning because I never made a fuss when she was a puppy, and not as an adult, a crack of thunder can explode directly over her and she won't freak, she might flinch but that's it.
