I'd maybe give you a little bit of credit if you were comparing Dobes to, say, Golden Retrievers.....but you're comparing two working/guardian type breeds with similar temperaments. LOL. You're comparing apples to apples.
German Shepherds have suffered from the same hype, prejudice, negative popularity, overbreeding and bad breeding practices the Dobe has endured, if not MORE so. A badly bred, dysplastic, shy, sharp, hyper-reactive German Shepherd can be a horribly lousy family pet, children or not.
And an "outside dog" is not a family dog. Dogs should be a part of the family, and rarely does that happen when the dog is tied or left outside in the backyard away from the family's center of interaction. Dogs of any breed left outside and not actively worked or socialized on a daily basis will often exhibit undesirable behaviors, just as you would if you were isolated from others all day long.

For what it's worth....I REALLY LIKE both breeds. A LOT. A well-bred Doberman and a well-bred GSD in the hands of a skilled, knowledgeable owner is a BEAUTIFUL sight to behold. Just like any breed, bad breeding and irresponsible ownership can wreck an otherwise good dog.
I'm just pointing out that your statement is pretty much unfounded....sort of the pot calling the kettle black. There is so much hype and prejudice surrounding BOTH the GSD and the Doberman Pinscher. And it astounds me that someone who seems to like the German Shepherd would insult the Doberman by suggesting it's not a suitable family dog (for whatever reason).
Responsible owners of all the "bad rap" breeds ought to unify for the common purpose of educating the public about what great dogs these breeds can be, in the right hands.
When breed-specific laws are enacted, or homeowner's insurance companies decide which breeds to discriminate against, they usually paint the Dobe AND the German Shepherd with the same, broad brush. Your energy would be better spent helping educate the public about your breed instead of spreading misinformation about other breeds.
