What are some of the earliest historical records that exist?
I can name a few that I know are really early, like the Epic of Gilgamesh, The egyptian book of the Dead, and Homer's Illiad. Does anybody know of anything earlier. BTW, I'm talking about written records, not historical artifacts.
The most ancient written records belong to Sumer and Egypt.
The Narmer Palette found in upper Egypt dating from around 3500 B.C. has the first tentative of Hieroglyphic writing on it.
In Sumer we find the earliest texts from around the same period on clay tablets found in Kish,Shuruppak ,Uruk and Ur, written is still quite primitive Cuneiform. They seem to belong to Palace archives.
The Pyramid texts are earlier than the Book of the Death and first inscribed on walls of the burial chamber of King Unas of the 5th Dynasty (Old Kingdom) around 2200 B.C. These texts would later be available in a somewhat altered form to a wider public and be called " The book of coming forward by day" which is the Egyptian title of what we call the Book of the Death.
