What are your opinions, if any, on the British band XTC?
They are a curious band borne out of the post-punk era who people either love or hate. Their popularity was never going to be stellar; especially after frontman Andy Partridge had a nervous breakdown and refused to play live venues after 1982.
They are a band who are often cited as influential on British music (Blur and Pulp among them), yet outside of people aged 40+, no-one really knows anytrhing about them. The albums 'Skylarking', 'Oranges and Lemons' and 'Apple Venus vol. 1' are often in Mojo et al, listed as important albums.
Zonk - what was even funnier was that their 'Dukes of Stratosphear' album outslold their proper XTC album, released almost at the same time - 'Mummer' - almost 2:1!!!!
I consider them as The Beatles of the 80's. I own every song they've ever released (and some they didn't!) including most of Andy Partridge's side projects. I also accredit XTC for my complete change in music appreciation. I had been listening to the likes of Boston and Journey till I heard a promo copy of Black Sea at one of my local record shops, it absolutely blew me away! I remember standing there in awe even through "Travels In Nihilon" and when it was over I begged them to play it again!
