Four track recorders: just what exactly can it do, will it do it all?
I'm looking to do just simple vocals and a few instruments, but I had always fooled with Boss BR-8 tracks, which were digital. I want the bare minimals, and would just like to invest in an uncostly 4-track. My only question is the performance and the directions to their use.
1- Will I be able to definitely overlay those four tracks, one after the other, on a single cassette, i.e., a "master"?
2-If so, how exactly does the machine DO this? How can it allow me to sing in the first track, then record a guitar track, all on the same tape, without deleting the first track-
my brain is still stuck in stereoland with simple cassette and record players where once you record over one piece of music, it's gone forever. You know, "to tape over", and such.
Is that what the four track will do for me? Allow me to layer and layer with the first track still playing so I can get my counts and timing percise?

okay, first of all, all cassete tapes have 4 tracks available the way you get 60 min on a tape is you do two tracks going on way, and then you turn the tape over and record two tracks going the other way. A 4 track uses a differnt kind of record head, all 4 tracks are recorded with the tape going one way, so if you are using a 60 min tape, going at standard cassette speed (1 7/8 inches per second) you're only going to get 30 min of recording time on that tape. Unlike standard stereo decks, a 4 track puts a different signal (vocal, instrument, etc) on each seperate track.
To mix down, you'd connect the 4 track to a standard stereo deck, and set the levels so that the volume and effects on each track is where you want it, then record your mix onto the regular stereo deck. However, unless you need the portability that these devices offer, I would strongly recommend getting a basic recording program for your computer (many are available for free, and good ones can be had for very little money) you can also find good used discs on places like e-bay or other auction sites. Cool Edit pro is a very good one, it's no longer made, but you can still find secondhand copies pretty cheap. As long as you have the original disc, you have the right to use the software. CE for instance has 256 tracks, and a bunch of different effects built in, and most programs have similar features. Now, unless you install them on a laptop, they are not portable, but the sound quality is unbelievable. I'd never go back to analog now.
