how many type of flute vibrato are there?
I heard James Galway and Jean Pierre Rampal playing Irlandaise in YouTube. And I notice that their vibrato is different. (my vibrato more like galway rather than rampal)
how many type of flute vibrato are there, actually? how does Rampal vibrato be produced? which one is better?
thanks

There are many TECHNIQUES used by flute pedagogues to teach each individual student how to discover and utilize vibrato effectively. There are several things we do NOT use - like that "chewing jaw" method That You see employed by some pop or jazz sax players - might work for THEM (who are gripping a reed) doe NOT work for us - just gives us TMJ! Yes, vibrato is ONE of the factors in a particular player's sound that allows us to identify them - and not just flutists, either - and Sir James Galway, with that very front focus and deep yet fast vibrato - he is ALWAYS easy to pick out. There have been, over the year,s many *schools pf playing - French, Japanese, American, British - and for many years, each had their own *sound* - a blend of a lot of factors. It used to be that symphony orchestras had their own sound, too ( Delicio ? Wanna add your expertise here? Alberich? Any of us geezers and geezerettes who used to do blind "drop the needle" tests in college, to try to stump our friends?) Now, we cherry-pick what we wish from ALL the schools - the world has become smaller, as it were. ALL of us try to have an arsenal of articulations, tone colors, vibrato speed and depth, and phrase control - to apply as the music warrants and our taste leads us. To separate this into *types* is not longer really relevant. I have a graphical practice guide that i have my flute students us - and every day, they need to run their vibrato exercises - either to check that need some improvement. That way, they have a large cupboard full of what they need, and it is all fresh. Discuss this with your teacher - and also go to Yahoo Groups na djoin FLUTENET - there are over 3,000 of us there, who will WELCOME your thoughtful questions. We are polite, friendly, USE OUR REAL NAMES ( no hiding or sniping!) and SHARE liberally with each other. I have made MANY wonderful friends, and actually get to meet them IRL at flute conventions. One of th nicest and most helpful I have never met, but hope to - I live in NY, and she lives in Vancouver - but go to her website and read HER wonderful articles Iit will take you AGES!) www.jennifercluff.com.
THANK YOU for a wonderful, INTELLIGENT musical question I wish you much luck with your flute playing!
