BlkBear is correct. You must purchase a phone at full retail cost or provide your own (through buying it used from someone else) to avoid signing a contract.
The only thing I want to add is that if you get a Sidekick that is not the Sidekick currently sold in T-Mobile stores (the Android 4G model), the data services will not work. T-Mobile stopped providing the data coverage to older Sidekick devices in May 2011. If you are planning on using the web with your phone, you will need to buy the Android Sidekick 4G from either T-Mobile at full retail cost ($399.99 plus tax) or purchase a used one off of Ebay or Craig's List.
T-Mobile offers prepaid plans that are no contract for the Android Sidekick Devices. These are monthly plans and can be stopped at any time.
