Ok, when i plug my camcorder in with a firewire cable, the blue import screen comes up ok. But when i click import, there is supposed to be the time of the tape (like how much in to the tape you are) in the top right hand corner but that isn't there, so when i click import, in the top left hand corner it says Importing... but when i click done, it shows nothing has imported. Also when i try and play back the cassette on my camcorder, it plays but the time doesn't show up. Does anyone know what might be up with it?

Sounds like it *should* be working...
The only thing I can think of (since I can't see what you see) is that iMovie is expecting one format - but the camcorder is trying to send a different format.
In this case, the Canon MD110 is a PAL camcorder that captures standard definition video to miniDV tape. But there are two formats the camcorder can capture - 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. When you are in iMovie, under File, select "New Project". There should be a drop-down.
If you recorded 4:3 aspect ratio, then select that in the drop down. If you recorded 16:9 DV widescreen, aspect ratio, then select that in the drop down. You should not record both 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio video - or any other formats - like LP and SP mode - always record in SP mode) on a single tape.
Another possible resolution (if the above does not resolve your issue) is to have the system create a new preference file. Be sure iMovie 08 is NOT running. Locate the iMovie08 preference file:

com.apple.iMovie8.plist
Drag it out to the desktop. Launch iMovie '08. Follow the prompts and be sure you select the right aspect ratio when you start the new project. A new "com.apple.iMovie8.plist" will be created in the Preferences file. Assuming this worked and you are able to import the video from the camcorder, you can now delete the old Preference file that is on the desktop and leave the new Preference file alone...
As for the date/time showing on the camcorder when you are playing back... Read the manual
