Why does cassette culture still exist?
I've asked this question before, but I found the answers...insufficient.
If I'm not mistaken, cassettes produce terrible sound, they wear out and MP3 files are easier to distribute. Yet cassette culture still exists, why?
A couple of very simple reasons - some folks have older cars and don't realise they could put a new CD player/MP3 player (or even DVD player) in there.
Secondly, it is easy to record to tape and carry it around (in your car for example!). Whilst it is not that difficult to record to MP3, not many people actually do it. To record 'high quality' MP3 directly from live sound is still very expensive - most affordable MP3 recorders are little better than dictaphones when it comes to clarity of recording.
So for now, there is still a market. If decent (and affordable) MP3 recorders were readily available that could record in stereo from an external source or from stereo microphones in bit-rates higher than 128kbps... If old car stereos were replaced... there would be no more market for cassettes.
