Okay, so I have a 5 year old Sony Handycam that I just found that hasn't been used in a few years.
It runs off a a small cassette on the inside, but there are no plugs for a Firewire cable anywhere.. So how to I get the recorded video on to my computer?
It depends what that "small cassette" is... Too bad you did not tell us the model number of the camcorder or what the "small cassette (miniDV, Digital 8, Hi8, 8mm, VHS-C) is...
You also did not tell us what computer you are using.
If miniDV or Digital 8, then connect the camcorder's DV port (not USB) to the computer's firewire port (not USB) with a firewire cable (not USB). With the camcorder in Play or VCR mode, launch the video editor in your computer and Capture or Import the video from the video editor.
Windows has MovieMaker; Macintosh has iMovie.
If your computer has no firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot to add one. If not, we need to understand what other resources might be available. Firewire, IEEE1394, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing - and they are not USB - and are not interchangeable with USB.
USB won't work. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things won't work.
If the camcorder uses Hi8, 8mm, VHS-C or some other "small cassette" then you will need to get an "analog/digital converter" or capture card. At the low end (and not great video quality) are the Roxio, Hauppage and other USB-based A/D converters. Better are the firewire based converters like those from Canopus (ADVC55, ADVC110).
