What does the expression "golden throat" mean?
This is an expression I've seen in many places, usually in the works of various musicians. I do not know what it comes from but I suspect that it has something to do with the old form of torture in which molten gold was poured down someone's throat.
The musician Rozz Williams uses the term in his song "A Fire of Uncommon Velocity". ("... Like quicksilver poured down your golden throat...") Johnny cash also produced two albums with the term featured - one called "Old Golden Throat" and the other called "More of Old Golden Throat". A 2001 film was named "Golden Throats of the 20th Century". "Golden Throats" is a series of albums produced by Rhino records. The radio personality Ken Roberts was called "an American golden-throated radio and television announcer known for his work during the Golden Age of Radio and for his work announcing the daytime television soap operas..."
So what does it mean?
In these examples it means someone who has a greatly admired voice for singing/speaking. It's not an expression, it's just a metaphor. Like a throat made of gold (a precious metal, which one would admire or value highly), therefore by analogy - a greatly admired voice.
If you describe something as golden, it is sometimes used in a non-literal way to describe something as precious, admired, excellent, great etc. For example: "Golden oldies" - admired music from the past, "Golden era" - an era in which everything was excellent. "Golden age" etc.
It's nothing to do with gold being poured anywhere!!!!
