Can I swap my 12-25t cassette for a 11-28t cassette?
My road bicycle came with a 12-25 cassette (shimano HG50)and a triple chain ring (52x42x30). Can I simply replace the cassette with a 11-28t cassette with out having to replace the chain, shifters or chainrings? I live in a very hilly area and I need more help from my granny gear. I was told by my local shop that to replace my casset would cost me about $600 and that I would be better off buying a new bike. I think he is trying to stiff me. I went to a different shop to get a second opiniong and the guy, said that I could swap the cassettes as I have described above, however, he did not give me a very confident feeling. That is why I am asking here.
I wasn't aware you could buy a 11-28T cassette for a roadbike!!!
Most standard derailleurs will work up to 27T with no problem, a 28T cog may require you to buy a long cage derailleur and longer chain.
$600 for another cassette ???? - I'm in the wrong job!!
They normally cost between $80 - $180 depending on what type and system you are using (I'm a Brit and work in Pounds, so I hope my currency conversion is OK!)
Question - If you live in a hilly area, why are you looking for a 11T small sprocket? you would be wasting your time and losing a gear.
A 12/27 rear casstte should suit you fine. (I use one when I am riding a hilly sportive event).
Hope this helps and best of luck.
EDIT: Not thinking straight! - HG50 is an 8 speed cassette! I have found a 11/32 for $22 (not $600) It is SRAM but it will fit a shimano hub.

But you will need to get a long arm derailleur and another chain.
