If the comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made their debut these days?
Would they be less successful, more successful or the same as they were 60 years ago. How would today's audience receive them due to the vast difference of the two generations? What would it be like to have a young Martin and Lewis in today's world just as they were back in their day?
That's a great question. I think they'd be just as successful. Before I begin, just a friendly FYI, the drunk act, though played perfectly by Dean, did not become a staple for him until he was with the Rat Pack.
As for your question. I'm 26 years old and I've been a fan of both of them for a long time, so forgive me if I ramble.
What I'm seeing in these answers is people taking the act, that they had in the 40's and 50's and pulling it out of time, like that's what it would be today. We're not in the 40's and 50's, we're in the millenium. they would be the same age as me. Their content and subjects would have been current to today's culture. Slapstick comedy, though not very prevelant in today's society, is the best kind of comedy if done right.
What made/makes those two so funny is not the content, the subject or even the type of comedy that they are doing. There was magic between those two. There was an amazing rapport between them. Because they got along so well off stage, they created magic on-stage. They played off each other and had no boundries. In the shows they did, there were scripts, but many times they would go so far off the scripts and they knew how to do it and make everything flow seamlessly. They knew how to get a laugh, they adapted to an audience and sometimes played off them.
To sum up, they're not funny because of the content or the subject...or even the type of comedy they do. They're funny because of the great rapport they had on and off stage, because they knew how to deliver and because they didn't take anything to seriously and had fun. That's what made them funny then and that's what would make them just as funny if they debuted today.
