Spotting telescope-i live in a dry climate in a valley that is 3 miles wide what is the best scope.?
i also need a tripode for the scope. I am using it only for observation of the terrain in the valley.
The best scopes are rather expensive. circa $1000 to $2000. The Swarovski 65 mm and 80 mm are among top of the line. If you have friends you want to impress, these will do it.
In the middle of the price range there is Eagle Optics (on the web) 78mm scope at $399 tripod and eyepiece included.
At the low end there is Bushnell compact 50mm for about $110. Not really recommended.
I have used the Swarovski. Impressive. But the one I own is a Celestron 90 mm. It is ok and relatively inexpensive. $220. Also compact. But you will not impress anyone with it. For the most power in a spotting scope the Celestron C5 is the ticket. This is a BIG scope 1250 mm. 60x to 300x depending on the eyepiece. Comes with 60x. About $570.
Here is the advice I have. Get a spotting scope that the eyepiece is tilted at 45 degrees. Much more user friendly. Get a tripod that is sturdy. In any kind of breeze, if the tripod is not sturdy, all you will see are jiggles. My tripod is sturdy but the vertical lock when it locks changes the position of the scope. I hate that. Be sure to get a tripod with quick lock legs. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to set up a tripod that requires forever to set the legs.
