I personally LOVE THEM BOTH. I am completely charmed by the "old time barber shop quartett" feel of the Statler Brothers that made people long for a "more quaint, simpler time". I also am a big fan of The Oak Ridge Boys whose distinctly proud sound helped to define "early 80's country"........ If I had to say one however, I would go with the Statler Brothers because of the seemingly enduring "pop culture" fascination that has followed them after "Flowers on the Wall" was played during the climactic Bruce Willis sequence in the blockbuster movie Pulp Fiction.
The Oaks cast a big shadow on country in the late 70s and 80s (17 #1 country hits,2 of them reaching top 40 pop and A/C also and 4 gold and 3 platinum albums) and also had a big impact in Southern gospel music prior to that (from 1945-1976).
Likewise, the Statlers began in gospel (in 1955) and crossed to country (in 1963 as support act for Johnny Cash) but continued to include gospel in their repertoire. However, despite being the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, their "star power" in gospel appears to have come at the END of their career..they weren't a "name" gospel act until having had their country hits and crossing back in the other direction. Their country success is decidedly bigger than their gospel "hit power".
I'd say due to having large presences in BOTH styles, Oaks get the nod for historical significance. That being said, I usually enjoy the music of the Statlers a bit more personally.
